"Key West golf. Fit to a tee!"
Is Key West golf of interest? If so, let me tell you that the best place to play is Key West Golf Club, which is open to the public. It's not that this particular course is a special favorite of mine. I don't play golf and agree with those who say that golf is a good walk spoiled. I recommend it simply because it's the only place to play golf on this small island. When you get home you can tell your friends you played on the southernmost course in the continental U.S. This course was designed by golf legend Rees Jones in 1983 and reportedly was improved in 1994 to bring it up to championship level. There are 18 holes measuring 6,512 yards from the back tees. The course is a par 70 and is spread over 200 acres. The fairways and the greens are Bermuda grass and you will see a lot of palms and mangrove as you go through the course. If you don't know what mangrove is, you will find out. On one par-3 hole you are required to hit over it. The dress code is no denim and no t-shirts, so leave your Duval Street souvenir purchase in your bag. There is a pro shop in case you forgot anything or want a shirt, hat or other reminder of your visit. If you get hungry, there is a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you like, you can get a box lunch. Non-alcoholic beverages and beer are available from the restaurant and beverage carts. The course is open all year. The telephone number is 305-294-5232 for group or individual tee times. Excursions are available from the cruise ships.
